Agios Stefanos

The early Christian Basilica of Agios Stefanos is located right on the coast, on the left, near the bottom of the hill as you come into the Kefalos area. The Basilica is built on a small promontory with the ruins of the buildings literally melting into the rocks that they were built on. It looks across to the island of Kastri and the beach of Agios Stefanos.

Agios Mamas church

Don’t miss the chance to visit Agios Mamas, a small chapel perched on a lookout south of Mount Latra, the highest point of the peninsula. The view of the sea is beautiful. Inside is an icon of St. Mamas – the protector of herds and animals – but the church is closed except during the festival on 2 of September.

Agios Ioannis monastery

On the southern side of Kos island, at the end of the asphalt road is the lovely Monastery of Agios Ioannis (Saint John). Only 7 km from Kefalos, this monastery is known for its traditional architecture painted in blue and white colours. It is built on a hill above Kefalos, this monastery is surrounded by lush greenery and offers amazing views to the sea. A large plane tree throws its shadow on the church and some wooden benches have been put around the church for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. The church inside is small but gives a solemn atmosphere. Beautiful icons and amazing frescoes decorate the walls, while a golden chandelier hangs from the roof. A few metres aside the church, there is an old, half-ruined bell tower. The monastery celebrates on August 29th and lots of pilgrims flock there on its feast day to pay their respects to the saint.

It is a nice sandy beach, about 5 kilometers long, well organized and very popular. The sea is crystal-clear and very clean with a small port for small fishing and excursion boats. On the beach you can find numerous water sports and restaurants, serving locally caught fish!
